We're looking for a Data Engineering Lead to join our Risk Technology team within the Corporate Risk and Broking segment. If you're an experienced technologist who thrives on solving complex problems and proposing innovative solutions, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

As part of our cross-functional Risk Technology team, you'll collaborate with experts in software engineering, geospatial information, and catastrophe, financial, and climate modelling. The Data Engineering Lead will be responsible for managing a small data engineering function supporting software engineering and data analytics delivery teams. You will partner with a centralised data function to leverage best practices and common tooling within the Risk & Analytics data domain. You will also participate in cross-domain data communities and practice groups. The successful candidate will possess a strong technical background in data engineering and data management practices combined with the ability to partner and converse with business stakeholders to steer and manage data processes and initiatives.

The role offers hybrid working with travel(1-2 Days/week) to office expected on a regular cadence for meetings and workshops. Some occasional travel may be required as part of the engagement with business and technology stakeholders.

The Role

  • Lead small data engineering function within broader Risk Technology team
  • Develop and implement data engineering strategies and solutions
  • Provide functional delivery expertise into software engineering and data analytics deliveries
  • Be responsible for the architecture, development and maintenance of data pipelines, operational databases and data lake infrastructures
  • Manage the documentation and metadata of the data assets and their representation within the Enterprise Data Catalog (Microsoft Purview)
  • Work closely with technology colleagues and business and stakeholders to understand their data needs and develop solutions to meet those needs
  • Operational management of the data assets and pipelines to ensure data is accurate, complete, and timely.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and improve data quality on an ongoing basis

The Requirements

  • Strong experience in data engineering
  • Strong data engineering skills with focus towards Microsoft Azure cloud technologies including SQL, Fabric, Synapse, ADF, Python, Power BI
  • Experience of defining or working within data governance frameworks and associated technologies (e.g. Purview)
  • Proficiency in data modelling, database design (relational, Graph NoSQL etc.) and data lake technologies and structures (e.g. parquet)
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling and modern software dev tooling such as GitHub/Azure DevOps and other relevant platforms to automate and streamline software development and solution deployment processes.
  • Extensive experience in agile delivery methodologies, with a strong focus on iterative and collaborative development.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to solve problems creatively and rapidly, both solo and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working remotely or in face-to-face meetings with stakeholders at all levels.

Desirable:

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Science, or Computer Science).
  • Experience or familiarity working with data associated with ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle) to support MI initiatives seeking to link risk analytics to sales, financial and resource management information.
  • Experience building or supporting colleagues developing statistical algorithms and ML models.
  • Basic or conceptual understanding of spatial / geographic data
  • Experience in the financial services industry, particularly in insurance or insurance broking, or the ability to quickly adapt to a new, unfamiliar environment.
